Why this field matters

Agriculture is not a problem to be optimised. It is a system that carries a continent.

Smart Agriculture explores how digital tools can help farmers grow food more productively and sustainably, while strengthening the communities and food systems that depend on them.

Start here

The three questions

What intelligence does agriculture already have? The knowledge systems of farmers, communities, and ecosystems long predate the digital tools we are now introducing. The field begins by asking what is already there — and what happens when we try to add to it, rather than replace it.

Who benefits when intelligence is added to agriculture? Yield gains, data-driven decisions, and precision tools do not distribute themselves. The field asks who gains, who loses, and what kind of food system is being built in the process.

What does it mean for agriculture to thrive — and for whom? Productivity is one answer. Resilience, sovereignty, nourishment, ecosystem health, farmer dignity — these are others. The field's hardest questions are about the goal, not the tool.

What the field researches

The eight research themes.

Every article published under Smart Energy is filed under one of these eight themes. Together they form the field's live research agenda.

01

Soil Health & Regenerative Practice

From extraction to regeneration.

How do soil biology, regenerative practice, and land management shape productivity and long-term resilience? The question this theme asks is not only what the land can yield, but what condition it is left in for the next generation.

02

Climate-Resilient Crops

Feeding a continent on shifting ground.

How do crop systems adapt to shifting rainfall, temperature, and pest pressure? The theme works on the plants, the practices, and the data that together determine what African farmers will be able to grow in 2030, 2050, and beyond.

03

Seed Systems & Genetic Improvement

Who owns the seed, and the knowledge inside it.

How do quality planting material, molecular tools, and seed-health practice reach smallholders? The theme asks how biological improvement and agricultural capability move together — and who they serve along the way.

04

Post-Harvest & Value Addition

The harvest Africa loses before it eats.

How do we reduce loss, add value, and connect producers to higher-value markets? Loss is not only physical — it is financial, social, and political. The theme works across all three dimensions of the food that never reaches the plate.

05

Smallholder Enterprise & Market Access

From subsistence to sovereignty.

How do smallholder farms become viable enterprises inside functioning value chains? The theme works on the market structures, financing models, and cooperative systems that turn yield into income, and income into long-term resilience.

06

Agricultural Data & Decision Support

Whose intelligence shapes whose farm.

How do data, analytics, and decision tools inform farm-level and system-level choices? The theme asks what counts as evidence in African agriculture — and who gets to decide.

07

AgTech Adoption & Extension

Technology is not adoption.

How do technology, extension, and farmer capability connect in practice? The theme works at the last mile — where tools either become capability or become shelved, depending on the conditions that receive them.

08

Livestock Health & Production

The animals that carry the household.

How do animal health, feed systems, and productivity shape smallholder livelihoods? Livestock is a store of wealth, a source of nutrition, and a pillar of rural economies — the theme treats it as central, not peripheral.
