Is education being re-engineered to produce capability — or to certify compliance?

Why this field matters

Learning is being re-engineered everywhere except where it matters most.

Artificial intelligence, data, and digital connectivity are reshaping learning ecosystems — not simply by introducing new technologies, but by transforming the structures through which knowledge is created, shared, and applied. The question this field asks is not whether technology will change education, but whether digital innovation will expand equitable access, educational quality, and learner agency — or entrench the exclusions that already shape who gets to learn, who gets to teach, and whose capability gets recognised.

Start here

The three questions

Who designed this pathway, and can they defend it? Every learning system encodes assumptions about who learns, how, and to what end. If the designer can't explain those assumptions, the system is not yet teachable.

What does the learner leave with — a credential, or a capability? Certification records attendance. Capability enables action. The assessment reveals which one the system actually produces.

Does the system reward compliance, or judgment? A learner can be taught to answer correctly, or taught to reason independently. The design of feedback and progression reveals which.

What the field researches

The eight research themes.

Every article published under Smart Education is filed under one of these eight themes. Together they form the field's live research agenda.

01

Digital Inclusion & Access

Beyond connectivity to meaningful participation.

How can digital learning overcome infrastructure, affordability, language, device, and connectivity barriers to expand meaningful educational access? The question is not simply whether learners can connect, but whether connectivity enables them to participate, learn, and progress.

02

Teacher Digital Capability

From technology adoption to pedagogical transformation.

How does teacher digital capability determine whether technology becomes a meaningful instrument of teaching and learning — or simply another layer of presentation? The challenge is to build the human capability and institutional conditions that turn digital tools into pedagogical change.

03

Learning Analytics & Assessment

From measuring learning to understanding it.

How can learning analytics, digital assessment, and AI-generated evidence improve learning quality, feedback, progression, and academic integrity without turning education into surveillance? The challenge is to use data to strengthen human judgement rather than replace it.

04

Inclusive & Accessible Learning

Designing for learners who are not the default.

How can digital education accommodate diverse abilities, languages, circumstances, and ways of learning? The focus is on designing learning environments that are inclusive from the outset, rather than attempting to correct exclusion after systems have been built.

05

Vocational Skills & Workforce Readiness

From credentials to demonstrated capability.

How can digital transformation make vocational education, skills development, employability, and lifelong learning more responsive to changing work? The focus is on closing the gap between what learners are certified to know and what they can actually do.

06

AI & Emerging Educational Technologies

From intelligent tools to intelligent learning ecosystems.

How can AI and emerging technologies create adaptive, context-aware, resilient, and human-centred learning ecosystems? The critical question is not only what AI can do, but who owns the learning model, data, knowledge, and decisions embedded within it.

07

Governance & Sustainable Transformation

From digital projects to enduring educational systems.

How do policy, institutional governance, financing, standards, data governance, and accountability shape the sustainability and impact of digital transformation? The challenge is to move promising innovations beyond short-lived pilots into enduring institutional capability.

08

Adaptive Learning & Personalisation

From personalisation to learner agency.

How does adaptive learning reshape learner engagement, progression, autonomy, and educational outcomes? Research should examine whether personalisation genuinely responds to the learner — or whether it simply teaches the learner to adapt to the system.
