The proposal aims to highlight and detail how sustainability plays an impactful and crucial role which can be shaped by short-term scheduling and optimization strategies for hydro-wind-solar hybrid systems for Eskom under the framework developed. Eskom is creating a renewable energy utility solution to assist in delivering on customers’ renewable energy commitments without customers having to procure renewable energy through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) or installing its renewable plant requiring large capital costs. “In response to the existential threat to humanity caused by climate change and global warming, the development of renewable energy generation technology has become a crucial decision for countries worldwide in addressing energy issues”(Dawei Zhang, 2024). The dilemma in the spotlight of this proposal is, “How does sustainability influence/or is influenced by short-term scheduling?”. Short-term schedules are processes and initiatives that will have a short-term effect on the system’s performance. The proposed research article will showcase Critical Systems Heuristics (CSH), a Systems Thinking approach, as applied to Eskom’s Operations System. The Systems Heuristics will be guided by the following sub-topics, Sources of Motivation, Sources of Knowledge, Sources of Control & Sources of Legitimacy. This method will suggest a transformation in business operations, transitioning from one process to another. The technique will be utilized to analyze and evaluate the operational framework of the South African power utility. Eskom green energy framework is still under construction and to be finalized but there is research that shows “A hydro–wind–solar hybrid system based on deep learning and nesting algorithm.” (Xi Lu,2023). This argues that digital technology and digital processes will play a crucial role in the successful rollout of the green energy plan. Other concepts regarding how sustainability impacts, short-term scheduling will be discussed are Environmental Impact in terms of resource conservation, Resource Efficiency, Integration of Storage, and how to enhance reliability. Utilizing tools such as SWOT helps Eskom identify its internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats. The above constructs a logical argument, demonstrated by a comprehensive understanding of the hydro-wind-solar hybrid energy systems by integrating various viewpoints and information sources
