Programme Description

Artificial Intelligence is a question of who controls data, infrastructure, models, knowledge, decisions, and value — beyond narrow regulation and ethics. This certificate examines the complete ecosystem: data, compute infrastructure, datasets, models, IP, security, deployment, evaluation, accountability, and economic value creation.

Learners investigate how capabilities are developed, how datasets are curated, how open-weight models are adapted, how shared compute is organised, how data ownership is structured, how local knowledge is protected and transformed into responsible AI innovation. Grounded in African context — sovereignty, representation, infrastructure, knowledge, and value — while remaining globally relevant.

Learning Outcomes

01

Build & Evaluate

Build, fine-tune, and evaluate small AI models on local datasets using cloud labs — demonstrating governance through technical competence.

02

Data Sovereignty

Design data ownership, consent, and licensing frameworks that protect community knowledge and enable fair value capture.

03

Infrastructure Governance

Analyse compute, deployment, and security trade-offs. Architect shared infrastructure for responsible scale in constrained environments.

04

Accountability Systems

Implement evaluation, audit trails, documentation, and incident response for accountable AI across the model lifecycle.

05

Value & Innovation

Convert governance capabilities into viable innovations, products, and policy proposals that create local economic value.

Innovation Challenge

Discovery · Learning · Innovation

Learners work in online syndicates to discover a real governance gap in African data, models, compute, or deployment. Each week moves from discovery to learning to building. You don't just write about governance — you prototype the governance mechanism: a dataset licence, an evaluation tool, an audit trail, a deployment guardrail.

The programme culminates in a build-oriented innovation that can be piloted, policy-proposed, or productized. Facilitator-led virtual studios, peer critique via discussion forums, and weekly virtual office hours ensure momentum without physical presence.

Programme Philosophy

Governance is a builder's discipline. We learn by building small, evaluating rigorously, documenting honestly, and accounting for who benefits. The programme rejects governance as paperwork after the fact. Instead, every module asks: can you build the thing you want to govern, can you measure its failure, can you protect the knowledge it uses, can you share the value it creates?

Problem-Driven. Start with real gaps in sovereignty, representation, and infrastructure.
Practice-Based. Cloud labs, real datasets, real trade-offs.
Innovation-Focused. Every governance artifact becomes a shippable innovation.
