How can we move goods and paperwork at the same speed?

Connected commerce, faster borders, and trade that works for every business.

Why this field matters

Commerce has been re-engineered. The systems around it have not kept up.

Smart Trade connects the systems behind commerce—from customs and payments to logistics and market access—to make trade faster, more transparent, and more inclusive for businesses of every size.

The three questions

Why does trade still move at the speed of paper? The physical movement of goods has been transformed by containerisation, aviation, and logistics. What has not kept pace is the paperwork that accompanies it — customs declarations, certificates of origin, letters of credit. The field asks why the digital transformation of trade has lagged so far behind the digital transformation of everything else.

Who benefits from faster trade? Trade facilitation benefits the firms that can move quickly, the ports that process efficiently, the platforms that intermediate. Whether it benefits smaller firms, informal traders, or the households behind them depends on who the speed is designed for. The field asks who the gains are for, and who bears the cost of the pace.

What does it mean for trade to be transparent in a world of data? Every modern trade system generates data — about goods, prices, parties, routes. The field asks who sees that data, who owns it, and who can act on it. Transparency, in trade, is never neutral.

What the field researches

The eight research themes.

Every article published under Smart Trade is filed under one of these eight themes. Together they form the field's live research agenda.

01

Intelligent Customs & Trade Facilitation

The border, before it becomes a bottleneck.

How does digital customs transformation reshape trade efficiency, transparency, and cross-border transaction processes? The theme treats the border as a design problem — one that determines whether trade moves at the speed of goods or of paperwork.

02

AI-Enabled Trade Finance & Risk Assessment

Money that moves when goods do.

How can artificial intelligence improve access to trade finance, risk evaluation, and financial inclusion for businesses? The theme works at the boundary between what trade finance can verify and what small firms can credibly demonstrate.

03

Digital Payments & Cross-Border Settlement

The money layer of trade.

How does digital payment infrastructure influence the speed, cost, and trustworthiness of international trade transactions? The theme treats settlement as critical infrastructure for regional trade — and as a system that shapes who can participate.

04

Supply Chain Visibility & Provenance

Knowing where things come from.

How can AI, blockchain, and data-sharing platforms enhance supply chain transparency, traceability, and accountability? The theme works at the intersection of verifiability and trust — where trade data becomes trade ethics.

05

SME Digital Market Access & E-Commerce

Trade that reaches the small firm.

How does digital commerce infrastructure enable small and medium enterprises to access regional and global markets? The theme asks what it takes for the gains from digital trade to be widely shared, not captured by those already connected.

06

Intelligent Logistics & Last-Mile Delivery

The last kilometre is the hardest.

How can data-driven logistics systems improve trade resilience, efficiency, and accessibility across supply networks? The theme works at the point where trade meets the street, the market, and the household.

07

Regional Trade Integration & Digital Policy

Rules that shape the market.

How does digital trade governance shape regional economic integration, interoperability, and inclusive commerce? The theme treats policy as an infrastructure in its own right — one that determines whether digital trade systems converge or fragment.

08

Market Intelligence & Data-Driven Trade Decisions

Anticipating the market, not just reacting to it.

How can AI-powered market intelligence enable businesses to anticipate demand, manage risks, and make better trade decisions? The theme asks how smaller firms can access the same informational advantage that only the largest traders currently enjoy.
