How can we build security systems that think — and protect life responsibly?

Adaptive defences, digital trust, and security that respects the people it protects.

Why this field matters

Security has always been about trust. What is new is the intelligence behind it.

Smart Security investigates how adaptive cyber defences can strengthen trust and resilience across connected systems while respecting privacy and supporting inclusive digital participation.

The three questions

What does it mean for security to be intelligent? Security used to mean walls, locks, and rules. Intelligent security means systems that learn from what happens, respond to what might happen, and act before a human has time to intervene. The field asks what is gained when security gets a mind of its own — and what is lost.

Whose privacy is negotiable when security is at stake? Every security system makes trade-offs between protection and privacy. The field asks who decides what those trade-offs are — and whose privacy is asked to give way so that someone else's security can be assured.

Can security become inclusive, or is exclusion built into it? Security is often designed for the people or systems already protected, and applied to those who are not. The field asks whether intelligent security can be built to expand trust across a whole digital society — or whether it inevitably deepens who is protected and who is watched.

What the field researches

The eight research themes.

Every article published under Smart Security is filed under one of these eight themes. Together they form the field's live research agenda.

01

AI-Driven Threat Detection & Response

Defence at the speed of attack.

How does artificial intelligence transform cyber threat detection, response, and resilience in dynamic digital environments? The theme works on making defence as fast as offence — and accountable for what it does with that speed.

02

Critical Infrastructure Protection

What must not fail.

How can intelligent security systems strengthen the protection of essential infrastructure against emerging cyber threats? The theme asks who is responsible when the systems the whole society depends on are attacked.

03

Digital Forensics & Incident Investigation

Making sense of what happened.

How does advanced analytics reshape digital forensics, incident response, and understanding of cyber attack mechanisms? The theme treats investigation as both a technical and an evidentiary practice.

04

Privacy-Preserving Security & Responsible Monitoring

Protecting without watching everyone.

How can security systems balance effective threat prevention with privacy protection, transparency, and individual rights? The theme treats privacy as an engineering requirement, not an obstacle.

05

IoT & Embedded System Security

The devices that never had a lock.

How does the expansion of connected devices influence cybersecurity risks and the development of secure-by-design architectures? The theme works on a world where every sensor, meter, and monitor is a potential attack surface.

06

Cybersecurity Capacity Building & Skills Development

The people who defend the systems.

How can cybersecurity education, workforce development, and institutional capabilities improve digital resilience? The theme asks what it takes to build a cyber-competent society, not just a cyber-secure one.

07

Cyber Governance, Policy & Digital Trust

The rules that shape the defence.

How does cybersecurity governance shape trust, accountability, and responsible adoption of digital technologies? The theme works at the boundary between technical resilience and institutional legitimacy.

08

Inclusive & Resilient Digital Security Ecosystems

Security for everyone, not just the protected.

How can cybersecurity innovation enable secure digital participation while reducing vulnerabilities among underserved communities? The theme treats exclusion as a security failure — for the whole network, not just for those excluded.
