What does it mean to make things well in the age of thinking machines?

Intelligent production, inclusive industry, and value created at home.

Why this field matters

Making things — well, and for everyone — is a question of capability, not just equipment.

Smart Manufacturing brings together AI, connected machines, and new production methods to help businesses of every scale improve quality, use resources wisely, and build local industrial capability.

Start here

The three questions

What does it mean for production to be intelligent? Sensors and algorithms can monitor a machine, predict a fault, adjust a process, or run a whole factory. The field asks where the intelligence belongs — in the tool, in the worker, or in the system that connects them.

Can Industry 4.0 reach the small firm on the next street? The equipment, platforms, and know-how that make smart manufacturing possible are mostly built for large firms. The field asks what it takes to make them serve the workshops, cooperatives, and small factories where most African production actually happens.

Who owns the value created by intelligent production? A connected factory produces more than goods — it produces data, knowledge, and capability. The field asks where those things end up: with the firms, the workers, the platforms that enabled them, or the countries that built the tools.

What the field researches

The eight research themes.

Every article published under Smart Manufacturing is filed under one of these eight themes. Together they form the field's live research agenda.

01

Industrial IoT & Predictive Manufacturing

Machines that tell you what they need.

How does industrial sensing and predictive analytics transform manufacturing reliability, efficiency, and operational decision-making? The theme treats uptime and quality as problems of attention, not of assets.

02

Intelligent Quality Control & Inspection

Seeing what the eye cannot.

How can AI-driven inspection and anomaly detection improve product quality, reduce waste, and strengthen manufacturing competitiveness? The theme works on making defect detection faster, cheaper, and fairer across firm sizes.

03

Digital Fabrication & Intelligent Design

From mass production to mass customisation.

How do additive manufacturing and generative AI reshape product innovation, customisation, and local production capabilities? The theme asks what happens when design and production converge in the same small shop.

04

Smart Supply Chains & Manufacturing Visibility

Seeing the whole line, not just the next link.

How can digital supply chain platforms improve visibility, resilience, and coordination across manufacturing ecosystems? The theme treats supply chains as systems of trust and information as much as flows of goods.

05

Workforce Transformation & Industry 4.0 Skills

The people who make the machines work.

How does manufacturing digitalisation reshape workforce capabilities, employment patterns, and the future of industrial skills development? The theme asks what workers need to know — and what they must be allowed to know.

06

Localized & Inclusive Manufacturing Innovation

Technology that fits, not just technology that works.

How can context-aware AI solutions enable SMEs and local manufacturing hubs to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies? The theme asks what it takes for intelligent production to serve workshops, cooperatives, and small factories — not just flagship plants.

07

Sustainable & Circular Manufacturing Systems

Making more while using less.

How does intelligent manufacturing contribute to resource efficiency, waste reduction, and environmentally sustainable production? The theme treats sustainability as an engineering output, not a slogan.

08

Manufacturing Governance & Technology Ecosystem Development

The policies that let industry grow.

How can industrial policies, innovation ecosystems, and institutional capabilities support equitable and sustainable smart manufacturing transformation? The theme works at the boundary between firms, states, and the systems they build together.
