How can we build resilient cyber-physical systems that serve everyone?

Digital twins, resilient systems, and infrastructure that serves everyone.

Why this field matters

The systems we depend on are learning to think. The question is what they will value.

Smart Infrastructure explores how digital tools can help essential systems—from transport and water to communications and cities—adapt to change, withstand disruption, and deliver safer, more reliable services for all.

Start here

The three questions

Who decides what infrastructure is for? Infrastructure is never just technical. A road connects two places and separates two others. A network delivers to some addresses and skips the rest. The field asks who makes these decisions, and what they are optimising for.

How do we design for failure, not just for function? Every intelligent system eventually fails. The field asks what kind of failure we can tolerate — and what a system must look like so that when it breaks, it breaks gracefully, and the people who depend on it are not abandoned.

What does it mean for infrastructure to be public in a digital age? The systems we depend on increasingly run on platforms, sensors, and software owned by private actors. The field asks how the idea of a public good can survive when its underlying infrastructure is privately held.

What the field researches

The eight research themes.

Every article published under Smart Infrastructure is filed under one of these eight themes. Together they form the field's live research agenda.

01

Digital Twins & Intelligent Planning

Simulating the system before we build it.

How does the use of digital twins transform infrastructure planning, simulation, and decision-making across complex urban and regional systems? The theme works on the models that let us test decisions before we make them.

02

Structural Health Monitoring & Predictive Maintenance

Knowing when the bridge needs attention.

How can AI-driven sensing and predictive analytics improve the safety, reliability, and lifecycle management of critical infrastructure assets? The theme treats maintenance as a design problem, not a repair problem.

03

Smart Water, Sanitation & Waste Systems

The systems that keep cities alive.

How does digital intelligence reshape the management of water, sanitation, and waste systems to improve efficiency, sustainability, and equitable service delivery? These are the systems most taken for granted, and most consequential when they fail.

04

Intelligent Mobility & Transport Systems

Movement as a public good.

How can AI-enabled traffic management, public transport optimisation, and mobility analytics improve accessibility and urban movement? The theme works at the intersection of transport technology and urban equity.

05

Climate-Resilient Infrastructure Design

Building for a climate we haven't seen yet.

How does data-driven modelling influence the development of infrastructure capable of adapting to climate risks and environmental uncertainty? The theme asks how we design for conditions that are still emerging.

06

IoT, Sensor Networks & Asset Management

The instrumented world.

How can distributed sensing and Internet of Things technologies enhance real-time monitoring and management of public infrastructure assets? The theme treats sensors as a new form of public attention.

07

Digital Infrastructure Inclusion & Accessibility

Smart for whom, exactly.

How does smart infrastructure transformation shape patterns of inclusion and exclusion in access to essential services and connectivity? The theme asks who is served by intelligent infrastructure — and who is bypassed.

08

Governance, Investment & Sustainable Transformation

From pilots to public systems.

How can infrastructure governance, financing, and institutional capabilities enable sustainable adoption of intelligent infrastructure systems? The theme asks how innovations become institutions — and who is accountable when they do.
