How can care reach people wherever they are?

Digital tools, safer care, and health systems that leave no one behind.

8 research themes Expert contributions welcome Field archive open
Why this field matters

Care is not a place. It is a relationship that has to travel.

Smart Health explores how digital tools can connect patients, health workers, and services to make care safer, more continuous, and more equitable, especially in underserved communities.

Start here

The three questions

What does care look like at a distance? Telemedicine, remote monitoring, AI-assisted triage — the field asks whether care that travels is the same as care that sits beside the patient. Some forms of care survive the distance; others do not. The question is which, and why.

Whose knowledge counts in a digital health system? Community health workers, traditional healers, patients themselves — the field asks whose knowledge is amplified by digital tools, and whose is displaced. A smart health system that ignores the intelligence already on the ground is not smart.

Can health data travel safely, and who owns it when it does? Every improvement in continuity of care depends on data moving between systems. Every risk to privacy depends on the same movement. The field asks how to make data flow while keeping it accountable to the people it comes from.

What the field researches

The eight research themes.

Every article published under Smart Health is filed under one of these eight themes. Together they form the field's live research agenda.

01

Telemedicine & Remote Care

Care that reaches further than the clinic.

How does telemedicine transform access, continuity, and quality of healthcare in geographically and resource-constrained settings? The theme works at the intersection of technology, clinical practice, and the trust that care depends on.

02

AI-Assisted Diagnostics & Clinical Decision Support

Intelligence that assists, not replaces.

How can AI enhance diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making while preserving human judgement and patient safety? The theme treats AI as an assistant to the clinician, not a substitute for the relationship.

03

Health Information Systems & Interoperability

The record that follows the patient.

How does interoperable health data infrastructure improve coordination, continuity, and effectiveness across healthcare systems? Fragmentation is the enemy of care; the theme works on what makes records travel safely.

04

Predictive Analytics & Disease Surveillance

Seeing outbreaks before they move.

How can predictive models strengthen early detection, prevention, and response to disease outbreaks and public health threats? The theme treats public health intelligence as a public good — and asks who gets to see it.

05

Community Health Worker Digital Empowerment

The last mile, strengthened.

How does digital decision-support enable community health workers to extend quality care beyond traditional healthcare facilities? The theme works with the people who are already closest to the patients, not around them.

06

Medical Supply Chains & Health System Resilience

The medicine that arrives on time.

How can intelligent logistics and data-driven supply systems improve the availability and reliability of essential medical resources? A health system is only as good as the supply chain that keeps it stocked.

07

Equity, Ethics & Algorithmic Accountability

Who is served, and who is missed.

How does algorithmic decision-making influence fairness, trust, and equitable access in AI-enabled healthcare systems? The theme treats fairness as an engineering requirement, not an afterthought.

08

Digital Health Governance & Sustainable Transformation

Systems that outlast their pilots.

How can health systems develop the governance, capabilities, and safeguards required for sustainable digital healthcare transformation? The theme asks how innovation becomes institution — and who is accountable when it does.
