Energy is getting smarter. Who is getting the benefit?

Intelligent grids, renewable power, and equitable access.

Why this field matters

The lights are coming on. The question is for whom.

Smart Energy explores how digital technologies can strengthen energy systems—from resilient grids and renewable power to community-led solutions—while making clean, reliable energy more affordable and equitable.

The three questions

What does it mean for energy to be "smart," and for whom? The field asks who defines smartness in an energy system. Efficiency for the utility is not the same as reliability for the household. The questions are technical, but the answers are political.

Can decentralised energy be equitable energy? Solar mini-grids, community batteries, peer-to-peer trading — decentralisation is often framed as inherently more just. The field asks whether that holds, and what conditions make it true.

Who owns the grid when the grid becomes intelligent? Data, algorithms, storage, and control are increasingly owned by platforms rather than publics. The field asks whether the transition to intelligent energy systems will be a transition to sovereignty — or a transition to dependency.

What the field researches

The eight research themes.

Every article published under Smart Energy is filed under one of these eight themes. Together they form the field's live research agenda.

01

Grid Stability & Energy Forecasting

Making the grid intelligent before it becomes fragile.

How does AI-driven forecasting improve grid stability, reliability, and resilience under changing demand and supply conditions? As renewables scale and demand shifts, the grid must learn faster than it has ever been asked to.

02

Renewable Integration & Energy Storage

From intermittent supply to dependable power.

How can intelligent energy systems enable reliable integration of renewable sources through adaptive control and storage optimisation? The promise of renewables depends on the intelligence that carries them.

03

Off-Grid & Mini-Grid Systems

The grid is not coming. Or is it?

How does digital intelligence enhance the sustainability and scalability of off-grid and mini-grid energy solutions? For hundreds of millions of Africans, the answer to "smart energy" is not the national grid — it is what can be built locally.

04

Smart Metering & Demand Management

Seeing consumption, shaping consumption.

How can real-time energy data transform consumption behaviour while ensuring affordability and equity? Demand management is not just a technical question — it is a question of who bears the cost of adjustment.

05

Energy Security & Revenue Protection

Losses on the line, and the reasons behind them.

How does AI-based anomaly detection reduce energy losses while addressing the social and institutional causes of system inefficiency? Theft, leakage, and non-payment are often economic signals, not just technical faults.

06

Predictive Maintenance & Infrastructure Resilience

Maintaining what has become critical.

How can predictive analytics improve energy infrastructure performance, maintenance, and lifecycle management? A grid that knows when its transformers will fail is a grid that can keep the lights on.

07

Digital Energy Governance & Regulation

Regulating an industry that writes its own rules.

How does energy system digitalisation reshape governance, regulation, and equitable access to sustainable energy? The regulatory frameworks that shaped the twentieth-century grid are not the ones that will govern its intelligent successor.

08

Community Energy & Local Empowerment

From customers to owners.

How can decentralised digital energy systems enable communities to participate in ownership, management, and energy decision-making? Energy sovereignty begins with the people who use the power.
