How does the design of goods influence/or is influenced by layout strategies using digitalization? This paper assess how design of goods influences or is influenced by layout strategy in a digital operation of Pick n Pay retail stores. Creating an effective layout strategy for Pick n Pay using digital operations involves focus on some key components that ensures efficiency, productivity, and flexibility. The retail company Pick n Pay Group operates in the fast-moving consumer goods market. operating a variety of retail kinds, including supermarkets, clothing and liquor stores, and an online platform, utilizing an owned and franchised business model. The real estate investment firm Redefine assets, based in South Africa and owning assets including Centurion Mall and Maponya Mall, among others, reported that foot traffic surged by 6% during the 2023 holiday season in comparison to the year before. In terms of retail traffic following the COVID outbreak, stores are once again at the top of the list of destinations. Retailers have to be prepared to rethink their shop layout, as a result Real Estates and Malls have been dumping Pick n Pays as their anchor store. In the context of layout strategy, Pick n Pay Retail could experience the following dilemmas which may affect their external environment of their product placement, their use of space including the floor, shelves and aisles, customer experience needs to be consistent across retail stores and the design of the goods needs to be attractive and appealing for the customers. Pick n Pay retailers can better tailor their layouts, in-store services, pricing, and product assortments to cater to, and play across, different customer segments. Imaginative and creative thinking on what the future retail store might be, viewing it as a multifunctional destination that provides a variety of experiences rather than just a location to buy goods. By giving us a foundation for reflective practice and assisting us in choosing the values and considerations that lead us to specific terms of who benefits from the system design and who is disadvantaged, the Critical Systems Heuristics (CHS) methodology enabled us to address and challenge the concerns. In order to guarantee that the new system produces the intended business benefits, CSH also assisted us in reaching an agreement when we had different opinions on certain concerns, thereby strengthening the position of those stakeholders who are impacted by the system design. Identifying the sources of selectivity in a reference system by identifying its boundary judgments, analysing these boundary judgments, and identifying options to reference systems by taking into account alternate answers from the boundary questions are the five tasks that the CSH methodology focuses on supporting in order to facilitate a methodical process of boundary critique.
